Today is the best day ever.
I am free to do whatever I want.
I am the master of my universe and
I am the narrator of my own epic story.
Backstory
My friend Trevor Soares is the Founder of Donate Attention + Vibrants. Trevor was the Head of Growth at Assembled Brands. He helped us grow from very early stages to a path to profitability. Trevor seemed to put himself to be in charge of my personal growth – and it worked. Among the gifts that Trevor gave me is The Boot Sequence.
What Is A Boot Sequence
A Boot Sequence is the process an electronic system uses when it wakes up to tell it who it is.
EXAMPLE: When you turn your phone on the first logo it flashes is part of the boot sequence.
I wonder if its intentional that so many people feel relief when they see that logo?
The Stories We Tell Ourselves
Each of us has a boot sequence – even if we don’t know it.
EXAMPLE: My nephew Phil studied accounting.
HE SAID: “I can work at this CPA firm working 60 or 75 hours a week and become a manager in 10 years. That will be my career.”
I SAID: “Stop telling yourself that. That’s a terrible story.
I was quoting Trevor. He said the same thing to me one time.
The Stories We Are Told To Tell
I was an Eagle Scout. I can still recite the scout oath and law. We can see organizations encouraging people in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lords Prayer as well.
Most of these memes people memorized include a statement of values for the community, and the people in it to believe including:
- Respect
- Gratitude
- Acceptance
- Foregiveness
- Awareness
- Confidence
When joining an organization, we are often made to recite the statements of the organization. Everyday in public school we recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
True Across Cultures And Throughout Time
Examples:
Judaism, “to pray” conveys the notion of “judging oneself” with the ultimate purpose of “transform oneself.” (Wikipedia)
Islam, prayer in the congregation (jama’ah) is considered to have more social and spiritual benefits than praying by oneself.
Aramaic: The word “abracadabra” is believed to have originated in the 2nd century AD. The word is thought to have derived from the Aramaic phrase “avra kedabra,” which is translated to mean “I will create as I speak.” We still use that abracadabra when we pretend to be magicians – in a way learning a core truth – all of our creation starts with our words.
The Bible: In the beginning was the word. And the Word was with God. And the Word was God. – John 1:1
Then God said, ”Let there be light” and there was Light. – Genesis 1:3
The Author: “Alexa, turn on outside” and there was light.
Writing A Boot Sequence
Our lives are a reflection of the story we’ve been telling ourselves. Everything we’ve ever accomplished – graduating high school, college, buying a car – started with a story in our heads. It establishes a limitless core truth about our reality.
Today is the best day ever
I am free to do whatever I want
I am the master of my universe
I am the narrator of my own epic story
It creates the space to start telling a new story.
Book Sequence Poem
I am
Today is the best day ever
I am free to do whatever I want
I am the master of my universe, and
I am the narrator of my own epic story.
[ Insert your own epic story.]
Do:
Start where you are
Say exactly what is
Imagine the opposite
It’s somewhere in between
Have an aim. Elevate your aim.
Recover quickly. Iterate.
You’re going to get better at it.
Remember it’s a practice.
Don’t
Imagine it will always be this way.
Believe your own bullshit.
Forget the universe is an intention reciprocation machine.
Give up.
